Order of War is a real-time strategy game set in World War II, more precisely the last phase in 1944. In two campaigns the player either takes the role of the Germany which try to stop the Russians at the Eastern Front or the Allies which progress from the west. There are overall 18 campaign missions and six individual ones.

There is no base building in the classical sense, the main focus lies on fast battles with a lot of units. Every map has several control points, e.g. bridges or intersections, which play an important part because every conquered control points gives more resources. These can be used to order reinforcements. A game is won if one side captures all control points or wipes all enemy troops out. Depending on the player's performance he receives points which can be reinvested into upgrades for armor, accuracy, range of sight and other categories. Because of the high body count surviving units don't carry over to the next mission and the upgrades automatically count for every unit.

The fast nature of gameplay gets supported by the lack of special tactics - the player has the usual range of tanks, infantry and artillery to his disposal. These have unlimited ammo which minimizes micromanagement. A unique feature is the optional cinematic camera: when activated it automatically jumps from one battle scene to another.
