The Goalkeeper casts you as a rookie goalkeeper, for one of the five weakest clubs in your home country?s top division, and your aim is to become the greatest goalkeeper in the world. Initially you must assign ratings for handling, reflexes, jumping and charisma ? these change throughout the game based on your performance. Training points can be assigned to save practice, weights, team talks, running and friendly matches ? each has a different effect on your overall conditions.

Matches are played out on a screen displaying names and ratings for both teams. If the Arcade mode is on, you will be required to make saves, by moving the mouse to stop the ball as it travels towards the goal. In Strategy mode, you have three options as to how to attempt the save. The Instant Save option determines whether the save is successful, based on your goalkeeper's quality.

Your prestige will increase more for making difficult saves, and drop more from conceding soft goals. This can be used to improve your contract and reputation. Media reporters will sometimes ask questions about the recent performances of yourself and the team, with multiple-choice answers affecting the views of your manager and supporters.
