Empires at War "Destroy the enemy base!" - that's all the instructions the player needs in Empire At War to understand what its all about. But before he gets to see the simple 2D-battlefield with his own base on the left and the enemies base on the right side from a fixed side-perspective, he needs to choose for which of the four nations including Rome and Greece. Each of the nations not only differs in looks but also features different units including their very own strengths and weaknesses.

Once in the game, the player builds offensive and defensive land-based units (like a simple stone defender) and watches them walk automatically to the enemy base and engage the enemy once in range. These fights last until one of the units dies after which the victor continues his path to the enemy base. To build, upgrade and by doing so gaining the advantage over the enemy player, gold is needed which is earned automatically (slow) or by killing enemy units (faster). In addition killing enemy units will earn the player experience points. Once enough have been collected, a level up advances the player to the next of up to five technological evolutions unlocking new types of units as well as additional upgrades.

The game features a multiplayer-mode for two players using a bluetooth-connection. [source:mobygames]
