Agalta Ares is a young warrior who lives with his old parents in a secluded house on a peninsula. One day he goes to the nearby town, only to find our that four people were missing under mysterious circumstance. Ares decides to help and ventures to the nearby cave, which is said to harbor an evil power. That's where his adventure begins...

Agalta is a fairly traditional Japanese RPG with all the familiar ingredients of the genre: linear progression, party of up to three people, top-down locations and world map, random enemies, turn-based combat viewed from first-person perspective. There is, however, a real-time element in the combat, similar to the ATB system of Final Fantasy series: the player is required to choose menu commands quickly during the battle, since the enemies would attack regardless of whether the command was chosen or not.
