Blazing Wings Blazing Wings is a freeware windows remake of the Amiga/Atari ST classic Wings of Death, developed with Game Maker and using the games' original graphics but with remixed music and new voices. It is a vertically-scrolling shooter where the player controls a dragon in fantasy-themed levels.

Each level ends with a level boss and has a different setting. The dragon has an unlimited amount of weapons and two lives to start with. Multiple hits can be taken before a life is lost. The gameplay is hectic, often facing more than 10 enemies at once, with both fixed targets and patterned waves. Through destroying enemies, the player gains points as well as power-ups. These contain extra lives, a shield, health, bonus points or a meteor rain. The weapon upgrades are not progressive, and it is possible to downgrade a maximum upgrade by picking up a minor power-up. Basic upgrades includes split fire, larger bullets, and beams, but there are also items that morph the dragon into a larger creature, along with 2 sidekicks. Anti-power-ups, marked by a skull, drain energy.

In this version, the starting level can be selected from the main menu right away. [source:mobygames]
