The Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood is the second add-on for The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, The so-called Book 9 consists of 19 chapters in which the player explores Mirkwood with the goal to face the first of the nine Nazgúl in Dol Guldur.

The basic gameplay stays the same as in the main game but there are a few improvements. Most noticeably are the overhauled combat system (which is made to be more responsive) and the possibility to craft weapons from the Second and Third Age (up to level 60). The level cap increases from level 60 to 65.

Independent from the main game is the new skirmish mode. It can be entered at any time and generates an instance where the player has to solve a mission, e.g. protecting The Prancing Pony from soldiers or fighting against a mighty monster. Before starting it he can set the difficulty and the number of players (overall up to six). If he plays alone bots - the classes can be chosen by the player - help him out. The abilities of these bots can be improved by investing points earned in previous skirmishes - the harder the difficulty the more points. There are eight scenarios included in the release version.
